A Rising Star Shines Bright: Estevao Willian’s Stunning Debut Goal for Chelsea
This was the defining moment when Estevao Willian truly announced himself on the English football stage.
More than 16 months after Chelsea secured the young Brazilian’s transfer from Palmeiras, the teenager ignited Stamford Bridge with a dramatic 95th-minute winner, sealing a thrilling 2-1 victory over the reigning Premier League champions, Liverpool. The sheer excitement of the goal was so intense that Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, was shown a red card for sprinting 50 yards to join the celebrations with his players.
"At just 18 years old, Estevao is an extraordinary talent with the potential to become a top-class player," remarked former England striker Wayne Rooney, who was providing expert analysis on Match of the Day. "He’s exactly the kind of winger Chelsea fans will be eager to watch week after week."
Despite facing setbacks with two more central defenders sidelined by injury and the absence of star forward Cole Palmer, Chelsea managed to find a way to triumph — and it was Estevao who delivered the moment of magic.
The goal itself was deceptively simple: the young Brazilian slid in at the far post to tap home a low cross from Marc Cucurella. But the impact of the goal went far beyond the finish. Having come on as a substitute in the 75th minute, Estevao had already tested Liverpool’s goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, completed four successful dribbles, and created two clear chances for his teammates — including a cross that Enzo Fernandez nearly converted, hitting the post in the 91st minute.
Estevao’s flair and skill have been on display in previous matches, with his clever nutmegs, flicks, and other eye-catching moves drawing audible gasps from the crowd. Yet, until now, a competitive goal had eluded him.
"Everyone Wants to Pass to Him"
Back in Brazil, Estevao was already a standout star at Palmeiras, one of the country’s most prestigious clubs. He earned seven caps for the Brazilian national team, now managed by none other than Carlo Ancelotti, the legendary former Chelsea boss. Transitioning to English football has understandably taken some time, especially since he arrived after the Club World Cup concluded this summer.
Chelsea’s assistant coach Willy Caballero, stepping in for the suspended Maresca, explained, "We understand that young players often face challenges when moving to a new country and adapting to a club like Chelsea. Our players have done a fantastic job of welcoming the newcomers. I often speak to Estevao in Spanish, which he understands well. He’s a wonderful young man, and we’re all thrilled for him — he needed this goal, and so did the team."
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin echoed the excitement, saying on BBC Radio 5 Live, "Every time a Chelsea player gets the ball, they look to find Estevao. That says a lot about his ability and what he’s showing in training. He’s only 18, but everyone wants to get him the ball. He’s going to be something special."
Why Are Expectations So High for Estevao?
Chelsea’s top officials have been buzzing about Estevao’s potential ever since they agreed his transfer more than a year ago. In a fitting farewell to Palmeiras, Estevao scored a stunning goal from a tight angle against Chelsea in his final match for the club this summer, despite the team losing. After the game, he was seen mingling with future Chelsea teammates, including England’s Cole Palmer — a touching moment of mutual respect.
For many English fans, that match was their first glimpse of Estevao, but Brazilian football experts have long hailed him as a future star. He made history as the first player under 18 to record 20 goal involvements in a single Serie A season (12 goals and 8 assists), breaking a record previously held by Neymar.
During the Club World Cup, Estevao earned the 'superior player of the match' award twice and impressed notably against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami. In Brazil, he’s affectionately nicknamed "Messinho" or "Little Messi" for his playing style.
Chelsea’s acquisition of Estevao was seen as a coup, outbidding European giants like Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich. He chose Chelsea because he believes in the club’s vision and the promise of a significant role in his debut season, with his eyes firmly set on representing Brazil at the 2026 World Cup.
Estevao also sought advice from former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva before making his decision in 2024.
Originally, Chelsea planned to integrate him gradually, but Palmer’s injury and Estevao’s outstanding performances have thrust him into the spotlight, featuring in every match except the goalless draw with Brentford, which he missed due to illness. Palmer is expected to return after the international break, recovering from a recurring groin issue.
Even without Palmer, Estevao looks ready to continue delivering crucial moments for Chelsea.
But here’s where it gets controversial...
Is the pressure on Estevao too intense for such a young player, especially given Chelsea’s injury woes and high expectations? Could this rapid rise backfire, or is he truly the next big thing in English football?
