Sabrina Carpenter has entered the chat, and she's not happy. The singer publicly denounced the White House's use of her song 'Juno' in a video produced by ICE, sparking a heated debate.
On Tuesday, Carpenter took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her outrage, stating that the video was 'evil and disgusting.' She made it clear that she wanted nothing to do with their 'inhumane agenda.'
The White House had posted the video on Monday, showcasing images of ICE officers detaining individuals, all set to the tune of Carpenter's song. They even cheekily quoted the lyrics, writing, "Have you ever tried this one? Bye-bye."
But here's where it gets controversial... White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson responded with a scathing message. She declared they wouldn't apologize for deporting 'dangerous criminal illegal murderers, rapists, and pedophiles.' She went on to question the intelligence of anyone defending such individuals.
This isn't the first time the White House has faced backlash for using artists' music without permission. In October, Kenny Loggins voiced his objection to his song 'Danger Zone' being used in an AI-generated video that depicted Trump. Loggins demanded the removal of his music, but it remained on Trump's Truth Social account.
Last month, Olivia Rodrigo also slammed Trump and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for using her song 'All-American Bitch' in a video urging undocumented immigrants to self-deport. She responded directly, stating, "Don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda."
And this is the part most people miss... The core issue here revolves around artistic integrity, the unauthorized use of music, and the political implications of associating an artist's work with potentially controversial actions.
What do you think? Do you believe artists have a right to control how their music is used, regardless of the political context? Or, does the White House have a right to use the music, especially if it is in the public domain? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
